Our Seed Saving Group at Work

Another good turnout at our December meeting with our Seed bank shared around. Members and visitors are free to turn up and bring surplus from home - this is one way we can grow on plant varieties that do well in our local climate. This month, some Russian Tiny Tim tomato seedlings, fresh red & green chillis from a prolific bush and Madagascar beans were brought along and shared with the group.

This is our November meeting where we processed a huge number of seeds in just one morning:

Our seed saving group at work ... well, good coffee and brekkie helps!

We use a variety of sieves to screen the plant material and chaff away from the seeds and end up with clean seed. The one below is a fine sieve. We have a series of trays and large flat plates to catch the seed below. These are easy 'tools' anyone can use at home.

This one has much larger holes and is often a starting point.

The mustard seed chaff and leftover plant material was used to mulch the cafe's herb gardens! No waste ... and maybe some self sown free plants for them to use.

Hope to see you next time.
